8 Days Amboseli, Mt Kenya Safari

This road safari will give you two nights in a traditional Serena safari lodges in Tsavo West National Park and two nights in world-famous Amboseli.

The tour then includes one night high on the slopes of Mount Kenya in our Mountain Lodge ‘tree hotel’, followed by two nights in the renowned Masai Mara Reserve

Day 1 Nairobi – Tsavo West National Park
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by our representative, you will drive to the Tsavo West National Park Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge by road, which is between 2 to 3 hours drive. After lunch, enjoy your first glimpse of the magnificence of Tsavo West, which is one of the largest game parks in the world, before returning for relaxation on your private verandah and, perhaps, a swim in the luxury pool. Evening sundowners are served overlooking the waterhole, followed by dinner in our restaurant, which also overlooks the waterhole.

Day 2 Tsavo West National Park
With a full day in the park, your options are wide. Both morning and afternoon game drives are offered (with trips to the famous Mzima Springs Hippo Pools and the Shetani Lava Flows). Tsavo offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world – vast herds of dust-red elephant, fat pods of hippo, giant crocodile, teeming herds of plains game, a fantasia of bird life and some magical flora. The lush, hippo-inhabited pools of Mzima Springs, fed daily by 250 million litres of water gushing from the lava flows of the Chyulu hills, provide an oasis of green, an under-water hippo-viewing chamber, two nature trails and some unique picnic spots. Sundowners can be taken on safari or at the lodge camp, followed by dinner.

Day 3 Tsavo West – Amboseli
After breakfast drive through Tsavo West to Amboseli National Park. Check into the luxurious Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, which enjoys soaring views of the legendary snows of Kilimanjaro. After lunch enjoy your first game drive in Amboseli with the chance of spotting large herds of elephant and plentiful plains game against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. On arrival back at the lodge, you may like to take a swim or a guided walk around the grounds. As the sun sets, enjoy ‘sundowners’ around the lodge’s campfire, or in the luxurious bar; followed by dinner.

Day 4 Amboseli National Park
Enjoy a day on safari in Amboseli with game drives morning and afternoon. Towered over by the magnificent bulk of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,896 m), Africa’s highest mountain, Amboseli is one of Kenya’s oldest, famous and most-visited parks. Endlessly panoramic, yet comparatively compact, it is dotted with emerald green swamps in which great herds of elephant wallow; half submerged in the papyrus grasses. The permanent marshlands also provide a potent draw to hippos and buffaloes, while offering a haven for the abundant water birds. An International Biosphere Reserve, the park largely constitutes the usually dried-out lakebed of Lake Amboseli, which is surrounded by flat grasslands relieved by very few trees. On the plains are numerous antelopes, spotted hyenas, jackals, warthogs, olive baboons and vervet monkeys. Lions are rare. Observation Hill, a conical peak, which is easily climbed, offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In the evening enjoy a traditional bush barbeque supper, which will be served adjacent to the lodge and will feature a display of traditional Masai dance.

Day 5 Amboseli – Nairobi – Mount Kenya
After breakfast at the lodge, drive to Nairobi for lunch at the 5-star Nairobi Serena Hotel. After lunch drive north through the Kenyan Central Highlands, up through the foothills of Mount Kenya to Serena Mountain Lodge, which stands at 2,194 metres above sea level, overlooking its own private waterhole and surrounded by dense Afro-tropical forest. In the afternoon, you may like to take a guided walk through the surrounding forest or visit our photo-hide, which is a just metre away from the wildlife at the waterhole (typically elephant, buffalo, bush bucks, antelopes, plains game, and genet cats). As dusk falls, enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail on the timber terrace, which overlooks the waterhole. Later, dinner will be served in our tree-level restaurant.

Day 6 Magical Masai Mara National Reserve
Leaving the lodge after breakfast, drive down the floor of the Great Rift Valley to Nairobi, arriving in time for a buffet lunch at the 5-star Nairobi Serena Hotel. Relax around the pool until 3 pm when your driver will take you to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport for your 4 pm flight to the Masai Mara National Reserve (45 minutes). World renowned for the breathtaking spectacle of ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’, the awe inspiring annual migration of the wildebeest, the Mara is Kenya’s most visited protected area. Technically an extension of Tanzania’s renowned Serengeti National Park, the Mara constitutes only 4% of the entire Serengeti ecosystem but its rolling grasslands, meandering rivers and towering escarpments offer one of the world’s most rewarding and evocative wildlife arenas. Upon arrival in the Mara, you will be met at the airstrip and take a game drive through this famous reserve before arriving at the Mara Serena Safari Lodge in time for a swim and cocktails before dinner and overnight

Day 7 Masai Mara National Reserve
Wake to an early morning cup of tea/coffee before setting off on a morning game drive, which will include a traditional ‘bush breakfast’ by the hippo pool. After breakfast, continue your game drive arriving back at the lodge in time for lunch. After lunch and relaxation, take an afternoon game drive in the Mara. When it comes to game-viewing, there is nowhere in Africa richer in wildlife or more eventful in encounters than the Mara. A pristine wilderness of haunting beauty, it promises its visitors a profusion of wildlife, prolific bird life and the unprecedented opportunity of catching up with all the members of the ‘Big Five’ in one morning. As to scenery, the 1,800 sq kilometers of this veteran reserve offer the classic mix of African imagery; miles of lion-gold grasslands, shoals of lilac-misted hills, a meandering river, acres of thorn-bush and mile upon mile of undulating wilderness.

Day 8 Masai Mara – Nairobi
After breakfast at the lodge, your driver will take you to the Mara Serena airstrip to board your 11 am flight to Nairobi. Arriving at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport at 12.15, your driver will meet you and transport you either back to the Nairobi Serena hotel or to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home. Alternatively, you can add an extension trip to fabulous Serena Beach Resort and Spa, on Kenya’s stunning Indian Ocean coastline.
